Censorship
Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other such entities.[1].
Censorship comes in many different formats, including censorship of politics, prevention of attention, creative and self censorship. In GamerGate there has been evidence to suggest that an uncoordinated but simultaneous censorship campaign occurred during the start of the GamerGate scandal and continues to this very day under some sections of the internet.
Pre-GamerGate
- Sega
- Sega abused DMCA to take down videos discussiing the game "Shining Force 2" even if said videos had no gameplay of the game in question. TotalBiscuit's video
- Resulted in TotalBiscuit boycotting all Sega products. This boycott still stands and he has not covered a single Sega game in any of his videos since, TotalBiscuit has said he'll lift his boycott once Sega issues an apology.
Start of GamerGate
During the initial stage of GamerGate, many discussions were censored.
Certain video game publications, journalists, and developers had locked many discussion forums about GamerGate. Threads pointing out examples of journalistic impropriety on third-party websites such as reddit or 4chan were deleted.

On December 3, an article on The Amherst Student, a college student newspaper, was released by William Harvey. Its tone is fairly neutral, and seriously talked about both the perceived harassment and corruption both sides present. At this time, the article appears to have been removed, though an archive can be found here.

Recent
- Twitch
- The games HuniePop and Hatred were banned from Twitch streaming just days before Hatred's release date. MundaneMatt's video on the subject
- The ban for Hatred was based on an AO rating which at the time did not exist for Hatred. Twitch gained the rating infomration from a Polygon article written by Ben Kuchera and not from the ESRB website.
