About
The Crash Override Network is a supposed “online harassment task force” created by Zoe Quinn and Alex Lifschitz who's supposed goal is to provide “resources, outreach, and support to combat mob hatred and harassment". In August 2016 a set of chat logs were leaked by a former CON member. These leaks revealed that CON was less of a support group and more of a harassment group than they claimed GamerGate to be.
History
The Crash Override Network was founded by Zoe Quinn and Alex Lifschitz in early 2015. After supposed "harassment" by GamerGate Zoe decided to create an "anti-online harassment" network. CON's stated goal according to their website states:
"Online Abuse is a broad topic that can mean many things to many people, so it's important to know what exactly we're well-equipped to handle. We take a multi-pronged approach that involves working with individuals, tech partners, law enforcement agencies, and legislatures. With each one of these groups, our network currently specializes in preventing and combatting the following issues: Nonconsensual Intimate Images (Sometimes Known as Revenge Porn) Hacking and Online Security Stalking and Surveillance Doxing (Circulation of Private Information) Swatting (Endangering People by Using False Police Reports) Impersonation Threats & Harassment Mob-Based Harassment Online Hate Groups"[1]
Initial Endorsements and Exposure
Soon after CON was created, it recieved a number of official endorsements from a few different organizations. Two of the most notable being IGDA and Twitter. A January 18th, 2015 IGDA guide to online harassment lists CON as a resource to for help when targeted by online harassment.[2] Similarly, on May 20th, 2015 Twitter Safety (@safety) made a tweet endorsing an article on CON's tumblr account about account security. Twitter Safety referred to CON as one of their "Partners" which indicated Twitter's endorsement of CON.[3] CON also recieved an overwhelming amount of exposure when it was created with at least 40 articles written about it. In publications ranging from The Mary Sue and The Verge to The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, with the general theme being that Zoe Quinn is striking back after her terrible ordeal at the hands of GamerGate.[4]
Financing
CON was initially funded through direct donations through their website as well being Zoe Quinn's primary activity on Patreon for over 17 months.[4][5] As of March 1st, 2016 CON was officially fiscally sponsored by none other than Feminist Frequency. While still accepting donations, it appears as if Feminist Frequency is the main source of CON's funding.
Controversies
CON Leaks
In August of 2016, logs from a CON Skype chat were leaked to Bro Team Pill who proceeded to leak them to the general public.[6] The logs were confirmed to be authentic by numerous people involved, including Ian Miles Cheong,[7] Peter Coffin, and Randi Harper.
The logs revealed an extensive amount of unethical behaviour, ranging from simple harassment, to colluding to get pro-GG people fired, to admitting that a prominent figure of anti-GG attempted to frame people with child pornography.
