Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other such entities.[1].

Censorship comes in many different formats, including censorship of politics, prevention of attention, creative and self censorship. In GamerGate there has been evidence to suggest that an uncoordinated but simultaneous censorship campaign occurred during the start of the GamerGate scandal and continues to this very day under some sections of the internet.

Start of GamerGate

During the initial stage of GamerGate, many discussions were censored.

Certain video game publications, journalists, and developers had locked many discussion forums about GamerGate. Threads pointing out examples of journalistic impropriety on third-party websites such as reddit or 4chan were deleted.

  • The deleted comments across all websites involved (plenty of examples)

The Verge

On December 3, an article on The Amherst Student, a college student newspaper, was released by William Harvey. Its tone is fairly neutral, and seriously talked about both the perceived harassment and corruption both sides present. At this time, the article appears to have been removed, though an archive can be found here.
