Hacking & Denial-of-Service Attacks

On September 8, 2014, TechRaptor announced that its website had been hacked around the time of publishing an article on GamerGate, and a day or two of data may have been lost. The damage of the hack was:

Plugins edited, db files changes, PHP Files blank, and rogue ad code in various files.^[2]

It is unknown if the hacking was in any relation to their positive coverage of GamerGate.

A month later on October 9, 2014, TechRaptor reported that it was the target of a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. As with the hacking, however, it is unknown if the DoS attack had any relation to TechRaptor's coverage of GamerGate.

On August 30, 2014, TechRaptor's official reddit account was banned^[3] and their subreddit, r/techraptor, was banned a few days later.^[4][5] However, the reddit account and subreddit were not banned due to TechRaptor's association with GamerGate as was originally suspected:

The reason the subreddit was banned is because it had a single submitter (/u/techraptor) who was only posting links to techraptor.com. They posted a grand total of eight links, all to that site, with the last one being posted three weeks ago. There were no comments and none of the links were even being voted on, so it looked like a pretty clear case of someone trying to set up a spam subreddit to promote that site, which happens all the time.^[6])
