Emma Watson hoax

In late August 2014, anonymous hackers released nude photographs of celebrities that had been stolen from the Apple iCloud service. A link to the photographs was posted on 4chan on August 31. [1]

On September 20, British actress Emma Watson spoke at the United Nations to call on men to do more to support the equality of women in society.

On September 21, Fox Weekly reported that 4chan had created the website EmmaYouAreNext threatening to release nude photographs of Emma Watson. The report was carried by numerous mainstream media outlets. 4chan users quickly discovered that the EmmaYouAreNext website was hosted by the Rantic marketing agency and that Fox Weekly is the product of a marketing company known as Swenzy or SocialVevo which is known for planting false information in the news and using bots to manipulate the voting system on Youtube.[2][3]

By September 24, the EmmaYouAreNext page redirected to Rantic's website which hosted the message "#ShutDown4Chan" and accused 4chan of leaking the celebrity nudes in August.[4]

Business Insider alleges that Rantic and Swenzy/SocialVEVO are the same organization.[5]

Possible identity of Rantic

Domain listing

A list of domains purportedly from Rantic's server includes:

  • Swenzy and SocialVevo
  • howiboughtfollowers.com with similar domains for likes, subscribers, and views
  • facebookflexy.com and similar "flexy" domains for instagram, twitter, and youtube
  • domains for several hoax websites, such as one predicting a secret Smash Brothers character

Rantic Records

4chan users allege that Rantic is the same as Rantic Records, the company of David Arbelaez of Texas, suspected to be the owner of car companies Arlington Autos and Interautos [6]

An upset customer accused Arlington Autos of "scamming people left and right." [7]
