Social Justice Warrior (abbreviated SJW) is a pejorative term used to denote a person who frequently expresses extreme and often contradictory and/or cognitively dissonant beliefs about social justice. This typically results in abject bigotry on behalf of the expressing party, ironically opposing their ostensible positions as proponents of tolerance.

Etymology

As defined by Urban Dictionary:

A pejorative term for an individual who repeatedly and vehemently engages in arguments on social justice on the Internet, often in a shallow or not well-thought-out way, for the purpose of raising their own personal reputation. A social justice warrior, or SJW, does not necessarily strongly believe all that they say, or even care about the groups they are fighting on behalf of. They typically repeat points from whoever is the most popular blogger or commenter of the moment, hoping that they will "get SJ points" and become popular in return. They are very sure to adopt stances that are "correct" in their social circle.

In order to be properly classified as a SJW, an individual must display a dogged insistence upon forwarding their ideological agendas through any and all means, no matter the expediency. As such, at least three[cn] of the following behaviours can be found in any given SJW:

  • Logical fallacy in argumentation, both formal and informal
  • Cowardly censorship of opposing parties[2][3][4]
  • Libeling, rumor-mongering, and/or harassing of detractors
  • Self-victimization
  • Self-importance (comparable to Hero syndrome)[5]
  • Over-collectiveness
  • E-begging
  • Denial towards offers of formal debate
  • Claims of individual oppression
  • Contriving of threateners and/or harassers in order to bolster an illusive victimhood


While neither inexorable nor invariable, many of these behaviours are typical of an SJW. While similarities exist between the two, SJWs are not to be confused with trolls, as trolls do not hold any SJW beliefs in earnest, and chiefly act similarly only for lulz.

Social justice

The supposed core of social justice, as defined by the National Association of Social Workers[6], "is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.". Thus, social justice can essentially be understood a modern reinvigoration of egalitarianism, with added specificity in order to ensure proper action on its behalf.

However, this should not be conflated by the average social justice warrior ideologue. Whereas social justice is genuinely concerned with mitigating societal iniquity and establishing just litigation to ensure fairness for every member of future generations, social justice warrior social justice is chiefly used as a shield with which to defend an expressed belief. Taking advantage of their minority or ostensibly 'oppressed' status, social justice warriors dismiss their detractors as bigots and ignoramuses, claiming that they disagree with them purely on a basis of sex, gender, race, religion, or creed.

This is an effectual veil with which to mask the weakness of one's opinions, as most individuals do not want to be trampled, derogated, and ostracized for being considered bigots.[7] As such, this avenue is frequently exploited by individuals who wish to catapult themselves to prominence, which in turn is an easily accessible avenue by which to acquire money.

Ergo, many advocates of social justice are bandwagoning onto a meritorious concept they have little understanding of in order to achieve fame and fortune.

Demography

Social justice warriors are almost invariably men and/or women of caucasian ethnicity, upper middle class socioeconomic status, and a western nationality. Most are between the ages of 18 and 29. Hailing from gentrified neighborhoods replete with wealthy parentage, it is quite common for SJWs to be simultaneous hipsters.[8][9][10][11][12][13] Many have obtained or in the course of obtaining gender studies and/or liberal arts degrees, and most align themselves politically with leftist totalitarianism[14][15] -- which stands in contrast to the political sentiments of GG, which is comprised mostly of leftist libertarians.[16]

Behavior

A good example of SJWs are radical feminists[17] who won't hesitate trying to bypass due process by preemptively forming lynch mobs,[18][19][20][21] which blindly 'listen and believe' just because their leader(s) is a woman,[22] will often exaggerate or outright lie about claims, facts, statements, or situations in order to further their agenda,[18][19][23] frequently inject their ideology into inappropriate contexts,[24][25][26] and will attempt to silence any and all detractors by censoring and/or slandering them.

One of the hallmarks of SJWs are their flagrant double standards and hypocrisy,[27] as well as their totalitarian[14][15] and philistinic convictions.[28][29] Arguments usually boil down to what they find offensive (or, in less obvious verbiage, "problematic") and why it needs to change,[2][3] using fallacious reasoning coupled with weak and carefully selected facts which don't hold up to scrutiny all the while.[23] To debase their opponents, many feminists use 'misogyny' in order to portray their detractors as being obdurate ideologues who disagree with them only because of their hatred of women, rather than for any valid reason.[30] Even though this usually isn't the case, many SJWs further exploit this tactic in order to claim that they are victims of demographic discrimination, an allegation which is regularly followed up by pleading for donations in order to compensate themselves for this purported victimhood. [31][32] Any attempt to debate or counter their points is met with bristly deflection, mockery, threats,[33] numerous fallacies, both formal and informal, or with outright blocking, regardless of civility, sometimes through rather unethical means.[34] They will often go so far as to call minorities who don't support their cause 'traitors',[35][36][37] who have 'internalized their racism' and are therefore too stupid to know what's good for them.[38][39] All the while, they earnestly believe themselves to be just arbiters of social justice, who speak on the behalf of women and minorities everywhere.[40] Sometimes, if a detractor is particularly tenacious, they will even attempt to destroy their lives.[41]

As a consequence of all of this, SJWs are prone to engage in what is best described as 'Oppression Olympics'.[42] Besides projecting their own insecurities onto others,[43] they also compete amongst themselves to see who is the most oppressed,[44][31] and, therefore, who is the most justified in their respective impropriety. Usually, the greatest ostensible victim is admired for their bravery, serving as a role model for others.[45] This explains why SJWs who experience despicable threats (even if not deemed credible)[46] and harassment (even if it's not harassment)[30][47][48] are all too eager to publicize it for personal gains,[31] which likely won't actually preempt any such related actions in the future.[49][50][51][52]

Relevance to Gamergate

On the whole, SJWs comprise the overwhelming majority of those who are actively opposed to Gamergate, having formed their own countermovement, Anti-GG--as this is, to them, a 'culture war'. With Twitter as the mutual battleground, Gamergate and Anti-GG have presently been waging war against each other for about half a dozen months. Their chief goal is to act as a diversion, however: They are there to turn a discussion about corrupted journalism into a debate about the merits of modern feminism.[53]

However, it is a debate in name only. SJWs' tweets upon the subject consist almost exclusively of ad hominem attacks against GGers, acrimony against the movement as a whole, straw mans declaring it to be a pogrom against women in the gaming industry, retweets of various quotes by favored leaders, cherry picking, exaggerating, lying, and threats of physical assault, rape, and/or death.[54]

They have invariably reacted with unyielding incredulity in regards to NotYourShield, claiming that accounts that tweet under its hashtag are either sock puppets, manipulated idiots, or internalized racists/sexists/misogynists.[38][39][40]

Furthermore, many of the corrupt journalists of the GameJournoPros list sought by Gamergate are themselves SJWs, further elucidating just why they are receiving such copious defense from them.

The various shortcomings, pitfalls, and fallacies of the SJW are both present in and galvanized by Gamergate, as it has presented lucrative opportunities for them to repeatedly perpetrate their sundry unscrupulousness.

    The gg autoblocker is up there with Therac-25 and the race condition in the XA/21 energy monitoring software causing the 2003 blackout on the illustrative list of software mishaps that affect real lives. It is the death of the individual and the subsumation of individual actions into a grotesque picture of collective responsibility, all wrapped up in badly written Perl that refers to people as idiots and sheeple. It’s not merely bad code, it’s code that is contemptuous of the individual and his or her choices. It supplements individual responsibility with collective guilt by association, branding people unsafe to follow for the simple act of daring to be interested in what some people have to say, as if narrow-mindedness were a virtue and interest, a sin.
