Pre-Gamergate Controversies

  • Justin McElroy's non-review of Nier, were he missed an early-game quest marker and spent an hour fishing in the wrong area. Calling the game as "hazardous to his sanity." [6][7][8][9]

  • Reddit user otimus reported being banned by Joystiq's Chris Grant in June 2011 for a comment describing an interview with a publisher as having "basically served to regurgitate cooperate PR".[13][14]

Role in GamerGate

On 26 Aug 2014 Joystiq's Alexander Sliwinski‏ wrote: [10]

Before I'm asked, @Joystiq standard policy is for writers not to contribute to game related Kickstarter, Patreon, etc.

In 2014, Ludwig Kietzmann penned the "We Are Always Fighting" article were they recognizes that Gamergate Twitter hashtag is a "harassment" campaign. [11][12]

In that same year, Joystiq was spreading around a fake anti-harassment petition signed by hundreds of video game developers.[13][14][15]
