Doxing, aka doxxing, is the internet-based pratice of researching and broadcasting personal indentifiable information about an individual or victim. [1] The methods used to acquire this information include searching publicly available databases and social media websites (like Facebook or Tumblr, hacking, and social engineering. It is closely related to internet vigilantism and hacktivism.

Doxing may be carried out for a variety of reasons, including to aid law enforcement, business analysis, extortion, coercion, harassment, online shaming, vigilante justice, and so forth.
