About

Crunchyroll is an anime and manga streaming service that delivers content, anime, manga, and Asian dramas, from the leading media producers directly to its viewers. The streaming service, Crunchyroll, started in the midst of 2006 by three friends at UC Berkeley and as a pirate site, before going legit.[1][2]

Role In Gamergate

In April 2018, Crunchyroll censored a mobile game, DanMachi Memoria Freese, removing several features that they previously advertised. Crunchyroll was still slient after both critics and fans flood the forums, warning others that the game's "touching" features has been removed - [3] Later, they, Crunchyroll, responded, straight up claimed that they "Just removed it, because it isn't appropriate for English audiences." [4][5]

In August 27, 2018, when Crunchyroll revealed their anime inspired show, High Guardian Spice, their customers' reactions weren't positive, since the paying customers thought that Crunchyroll was giving money to Japan, fixing their servers - They still use Flash and their HTML5 was in beta mode.[6][7], and other important issues concerning the anime streaming service.[8][9] The anime community feels that it was pushing Social Justice Warrior agendas. This led to Crunchyroll shutting down the forum thread for High Guardian Spice.[10][11]

Kazuyoshi Yaginuma, a director for Netju no Susome, tweeted everything that's wrong with the streaming service, like Crunchyroll lied to their customers that they will support them. Instead they're using the money to make their own series.[12][13] Despite Crunchyroll's claims that they won't used sub money for High Guardain Spice.

Funimation and Crunchyroll will end their partnership on Novermber 9, 2018.[14]

Trivia

Their mascot is Crunchyroll Hime, who started out as a fan creation that was submitted to the Anime Industry-tans Contest and was made by Eunice Dahae Baik.[15] [16]
