Voat is a social news aggregation website where community members can submit and vote on a variety of online news, topics, and media content using a functionally that is similarly utilized by popular sites, like [[Reddit]] and Digg. == Features ==

The site is divided into different community boards called "subverses" with each dedicated to a specific topic and containing its own set of rules. Users can submit content to a subverse, which is subsequently voted upon by the community to determine its placement on the board's front page. If a post received a significant amount of upvotes, it may be featured on the front page of Voat.

== History and Background ==

Two computer science/ economic students from Switzerland's University of Zurich launched the site, WhoaVerse, as a hobby project in April 2014. In December 2014, the site changed it's name and move the domain to Voat.co.

== First Reddit Exodus ==

On February 7, 2015, the Redditor, metaredditcancer, posted a comment accusing a group of moderators from the r/Shitredditsays community and a few corrupt Reddit administrators of organizing a cabal to promote radical feminist beliefs and censor opposing viewpoints across Reddit. In response, many Reddit users promoted Voat as a free speech alternative to Reddit. Two days later, the Voat team did an ''Ask Me Anything'' (AMA) post on Voat's announcements board. On the thread, the team responded to an inquiry asking if they considered themselves as "Social Justice Warriors".

''We are not SJW and don't plan on becoming it. Also (luckily for us), no SJW girlfriends ;) We believe in freedom of speech as an inherent value in human communication and will do the utmost to uphold this principle on Voat.''

During February 18, 2015, The Washington Post reported that many Reddit users had abandoned the site following the post and were moving to Voat.
