Kotaku In Action is a subreddit and subverse in the main hub in Reddit and Voat for Gamergate discussions.

Our Mission

KotakuInAction is a platform for open discussion of the issues where gaming, nerd culture, the internet, and media collide.

We believe that the current standards of ethics in the media has alienated the artists, developers, and creators, who perpetuate the things we love, enjoy, and enthusiastically build communities around. We have taken notice of various incidents involving conflicts of interest and agenda-pushing within media which we feel are damaging to the credibility of the medium and harm the community at large. We believe the current media is complicit in the proliferation of an ideology that squashes individuality, divides along political lines, and is stifling to the freedom of creativity that is the foundation of human expression.

KotakuInAction is a community that condemns willful censorship, exclusion, harassment, or abuse. It is a community that organizes to hold the media accountable to the concept of artistic freedom by standing up for the artist, the developer, the writer, the filmmaker, and all who enjoy the freedom to create, explore, and expand. It is a community that allows the exchange of information, supports the ongoing discussion of media ethics, and protects the right of the individual to embrace their personal interests in entertainment and freedom. [1]

History

The Kotaku In Action subreddit community, was created by david-me. Before Gamergate happened, KiA was created to point out the incredibly dumb stuff by the gaming media, especially from Kotaku. Since Gawker is of low standards. But when two subreddits, r/games and r/gaming, banned discussion about the disclosure policies by journalists and the trolls and Shit Reddit Says natives took over r/gamergate subreddit. Kotaku in Action became the defacto one for Gamergate discussion (Besides 8chan), along with talks about censorship, agendas, bias, and other issues in the gaming media and related topics. [2]

Role in Gamergate

(Insert Something Cool)

Eventually, the subreddit became the hub station of news and discussion. [3] [4] Mainly for the reason that many of reddit's mods in most subreddits have been deleting posts and comments on Gamergate (and similar issues and concerns) and the admins have shadowbanned hundreds, if not thousands, of people for the same reason. Therefore, even though Kotaku in Action is a good resource, the subscribers are discourage to buy reddit gold (aka premium membership) or allowing ads on the site.

On July 13, 2018, davidme set the subreddit on private and attempted to nuke KotakuInAction.[5] The subreddit was gone for about 45-50 minutes, until a reddit admin and the KiA mods wrestle the power back from davidme to put back everything live and in order. According to the former top mod, the subreddit became infested with "racism, sexism, and other -isms", and therefore he really wanted to close the sub, despite being handed over supervisory control. [6][7] HandofBane eventually explained what happen: davidme went off the deep end, made a screed on another sub, and attempted to nuke the whole mod team, the CSS, and made a huge mess.[8]

Doings and Projects

Birth of Gilda Mars

Gilda Mars was made when KotakuInAction managed to secure $4,000 of donatations to have a character made for The Fine Young Capitalists' game, Afterlife Empire. [9]

Imzy Experiment

Redditor willhicks is currently conducting an experiment to see how long Kotaku In Action community can remain in Imzy and not starting problems for the other communities. In addition, it will be interesting to see if the Imzy mods flat out ban it on purely political grounds. [10]

Kotaku In Action Steam Group

There was a Kotaku In Action Steam group, but one of the administrator moderators, Poporx, who feels as though he moved beyond Gamergate and decided that he would make some changes, like be more neutral and be a fullfledge community for ALL gamers. [11] This prompted a lot of the KIA members to leave, since it also seems as though Poporx was advertising his company and wants to change it's name as well. [12] Poporx posted in the reddit community to let them to that it was never his intention to change the KiA Steam group into his company's number one fan group. He does acknowledge that his original post caused a mess and that he should not have started with talking about his company. Plus, Poporx stated that he will make sure to keep the group's name and running, but he would NEED people to take up the administrator and moderator positions, unless the group becomes a ghost town. [13] He left a poll asking the Kotaku In Action reddit Community what should be done about the Steam group, most of them voted that the Steam group should be kept the way it is, but the group themselves needs to step it up. [14] [15] Eventually, Poporx posted another announcement, this time it was a "Help Needed" searching for moderators and administrators for the group and help grow it. Since, he, himself has several projects that his real life work requires and he would not be around for a while. [16] [17] The KiA Steam group is now under management of new mods and administrators. [18]

Trivia

The moderators from other reddit communities (known as subreddits), such as those from r/OffMyChest, r/Rape, and r/NaturalHair deployed a SaferBot to automatically block those that post in KotakuInAction. [19]
